Murthwaite Green Trakking Centre

In May of 2006 we went on our first riding holiday, a friend had recommended this place on the cost of Cumbria, near Millom. The place in question is the Murthwaite Green Trekking Centre. The thing that swung it for us was that they catered for riders of all ability levels and, more important, were, according to my friend, a very friendly centre. So only having taken lessons since the September before they sounded like a place that would be fun and look after us.

So the first question, from the photography side of things, was how to get good photos from horseback with out worrying about taking a heavy 35mm camera or an expensive digital camera. The conclusion I came to was to use a disposable camera. After testing Kodak, Fuji, Tesco and Minolta disposable cameras I ended up going for the Fujifilm ones because the Kodak ones were too slow and blurred, the Tesco ones had poor colour and the Minolta ones were too hard to find.

The first day of riding I was too worried about meeting the new horses and how I'd cope riding them. The idea of riding on a wide open beach was worrying to say the least. But the staff and horses were great. Before being let out on the beach I had an assessment ride in the school. It was not the neatest I have ever ridden, but I was able to canter and stop again. We rode through the village and a short way along the road and then there was the sea. As the horses walked on the beach you could feel them relax and pick up their heads and smell the sea air. During the ride I was so disappointed that I had not taken a camera with me, the beach was so wide and flat and just perfect for riding on.

On the next two day we rode on the beach, the final day we had 4 hours on the beach with a picnic in the sand dunes, it was sunny and warm and was just the perfect introduction to beach riding. Since that first holiday we have returned four times in a year and every time it just seems to get better. The last time we went I was allowed to gallop on the beach, which shows my riding is getting better. I have enjoyed every trip to Murthwaite Green alot, the staff are friendly, the horses are great and the beach is perfect for riding.

So, to the bit you have been waiting for, just how well did the photos from horse back with a £5 disposable camera turn out? Well, I think they turned out better than the ones you might have got from a very cheap digital camera, the colour wasn't always accurate and the fixed focus did mean things in the distance lacked definition but overall I am very pleased with the results.

If you are wanting to take a riding holiday at Murthwaite Green Trekking Centre then you can find their website at www.murthwaitegreen.co.uk or give them a call on 01229 770876.
